Faith:

Devoted Husband with newfound Faith
Leo hungered for purpose and meaning and found it at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes event that we attended as a community service project. He furthered his study through a campus ministry. There he found the love of his life. Fortunately, we had laid a foundation for him being ready to meet her through many conversations that processed the pain and brought healing to Leo’s heart. We even stood by as he pursued his past actively by contacting various people he needed to forgive and ask forgiveness. Leo was not only ready to start a new promising marriage, he embraced a new life. I’m just glad a bicycle was a part of it, so I could be a part of Leo’s transformation.

I include Leo as an example of what we accomplish in all aspects of life  development, advancement, and placement. In Leo’s case, we chose a different career path from cycling but significantly decreased the time of discovery so that he could make choices as a young man with many opportunities in other areas.

6 months lifestyle training for weight management/fitness/lifestyle change

Fitness:
Sloppy Lifestyle to Collegiate Racer

A gifted student, Leo cruised through high school and seemed destined for satisfactory completion of college. As a computer science major, he had a sedentary lifestyle. He was also nursing some past relational pain leftover from an old girlfriend he missed a lot. Leo turned to food as a comfort. Eventually dissatisfied with this, he got into cycling. When I met him, he was a struggling Category D collegiate rider with little notions about how to train. While his “big-boned” structure meant a powerful sprint, it was clear that efforts requiring speed endurance and continual surges into oxygen debt were a challenge for Leo, as was his strength-to-weight ratio. As his coach, we continued to make progress with his fitness and skills but really turned a corner when Leo enlisted me for a 6-month “internship” into total lifestyle submersion as a serious cyclist. Under this comprehensive direction, Leo lost 100 lbs and reduced his body fat to 10%.

Facts:

Recreational Racing is his best potential
Leo’s Russian genetics made him a fine sprinter and a lifestyle of recreational racing is his as an amateur cyclist. His most blessed talents lie in business and information systems. We made no bones about that but used the bike as a vehicle to make lifestyle changes that a pro cyclist would envy and addressed every area of his life that needed to be free from hindrances for  performance in life.

We tackled both the composition of his diet as well as his eating habits. We did a postural analysis and worked on strength and flexibility. We sought outside counsel for the nutritional portion, but Leo emulated a process we have in place to ensure both energy and enjoyment from meals as a fuel source. We incorporated his training as a sub-priority to completing college. Leo’s grades came up and he made his mother happy! A pattern of tightening his choices and bringing discipline emerged. Still Leo wanted more.
